Students cross the Sriramadevarakatte barrage every day to go to college
HASSAN: The Sriramadevarakatte barrage in Holenarsipur taluk of Hassan district helps irrigate 20,000 acres. It gets water from the Hemavathy through the Gorur dam in Hassan taluk. Whenever water is released from Gorur dam, the barrage is submerged, causing inconvenience to the people.
Students of Kattehalli, Doddabyathavalli, Chikkabyagathavalli, Magaledanahalli and Hippavu villages have to cross the barrage to reach the main road to go to Hassan.
Every day they have to cover half-a-km on foot on the barrage to reach the Holenarsipur-Hassan road. Otherwise, they have to travel 10 km from their village to reach the main road.
Therefore, students prefer to walk the half-a-km on the barrage so as to reach the main road in 15 minutes.
Roopa, Ganesh, Ramu and Govinda, who study in the degree college in Hassan, said that the barrage would be submerged for almost ten months in a year.
The villagers’ plea to the Government for a bridge is yet to be considered by the Government.
During monsoon, it is dangerous to walk on the barrage because of the force of the water flow.
Many of the boys and girls from these villages study in various colleges in Hassan. If they cross the barrage, the distance to Hassan is 28 km.
If they board the bus from their villages, the distance is 38 km. So, they preferred to walk on the barrage, the students said.
