MANGALORE: The police seized 9,800 litres of rectified spirit at Mahavir Circle, Kankanady late on Tuesday. It was being transported illegally in 280 cans of 35-litre capacity each on the vehicle, according to a press release from B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, here on Wednesday. The police arrested Sumod C.R., resident of Belakatte House in Meenabil taluk in Kottayam district and Sunil K.V., resident of Neeloor Post, Meenabil taluk. The police have also seized the lorry. While the value of rectified spirit seized is Rs. 5.25 lakh, the value of the lorry has been estimated at Rs. 3 lakh. A case under Karnataka Excise Act has been registered at Mangalore Rural police station in this connection. The accused were produced before JMFC III Court and have been remanded in judicial custody. They were reportedly transporting the spirit from Tamil Nadu to Kochi.
