Bring politicians under Lokayukta purview: Manorama

Fund set up for starting consumer clubs in colleges

Election funding by parties breeds corruption: MP

Udupi: President of Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Chandrashekaraiah said on Monday that Karnataka topped the country in clearing consumer dispute cases.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Udupi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum building here.

Mr. Chandrashekaraiah said that there appeared to be less awareness about consumer laws in Udupi district as the forum had received 1,040 complaints. Of them, it had disposed of 900 cases.

“A fund, with contributions from the Union and the State governments, has been set up to start consumer clubs in colleges to make students aware of consumer laws. A consumer who registers a case/complaint can see its status in the computers installed at the 30 District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums,” he said.

Manorama Madhwaraj, MP, said that all politicians, right from the Prime Minister to the Gram Panchayat members, should be brought under the purview of the Lokpal and the Lokayukta.

Stating that corruption had entered all spheres of life, Ms. Madhwaraj, said: “Corruption in the country can be removed only through State funding of elections. Election funding by political parties breeds corruption.”

Ms. Madhwaraj said, as Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in Veerappa Moily’s Ministry, she could learn that poor people had to wait for hours to get kerosene. “This is done deliberately as shopkeepers can sell kerosene in black market. When I started taking action against them, the shopkeepers complained to local MLAs through whom they had secured licences. The MLAs put pressure on Mr. Moily who shifted me to Women and Child Welfare portfolio,” she said. Ms. Madhwaraj announced that she would contribute Rs. seven lakh from her MP’s Local Area Development Fund for the forum’s new building.
