Gram panchayat elections largely peaceful

HASSAN: The gram panchayat elections on Wednesday was largely peaceful throughout the district, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Yellappa (who is the in-charge Superintendent of Police). The voter turnout was around 80 per cent.

A case of assault was reported at Sanyasihalli in Belur taluk where a Bharatiya Janata Party worker Anne Gowda was allegedly assaulted by Janata Dal (S) workers. Criminal cases have been registered. At Honnenahalli in Arkalgud taluk, police seized liquor worth Rs. 4,500, while in Alur, 200 saris and a vehicle were confiscated.

Owing to dispute over selection of candidates, people of Paduvalahosahalli and Chikkahalli villages in Arkalgud taluk boycotted the polls.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Subbaraya Kamat said Channarayapatna recorded 87 per cent polling, Arsikere taluk 85 per cent, Hassan, Holenarasipur and Arkalgud 80 per cent, and Sakleshpur, Alur and Belur 75 per cent.
