Chamarajanagar: The voter turnout for the gram panchayat elections held here was 68 per cent. Polling was also peaceful, except for stray incidents of clash among workers from various parties. Basavaraju (78), contesting for a seat in the Maddur Gram Panchayat in Yelandur taluk, died of a heart attack on the polling day. A total of 120 gram panchayats in the district went to the polls on Wednesday. Though polling began at 7 a.m., people started queuing up only by 11 a.m.

Voting was delayed for an hour in Alahalli village, coming under Tagarapur Gram Panchayat limits, because of shortage of ballotpapers in Alahalli-1 and Alahalli-2 polling booths. The shortfall was soon overcome, and polling continued.
