The focused implementation of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) under the centrally-aided Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan campaign has helped Belgaum Zilla Panchayat achieve 67.3 per cent coverage.
According to zilla panchayat officials, of the target of 6,97,766 IHHLs set under the project, 4,69,605 units had been provided so far.
The breakup on beneficiaries showed that 74.38 per cent of families belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and 64.52 per cent families above poverty line now have IHHL.
A report released on November 4 says the government surpassed the target for providing toilets in anganwadis and government schools.
Against the target of providing toilets to 3,290 schools in the district, 3,500 were constructed.
With respect to anganwadis, 2,199 were constructed while the target was 1,962 toilets.
Official sources said open defecation in villages was still a problem, mainly due to the lack of assured water supply.
However, awareness campaigns taken up with the help of gram panchayats on the importance of proper sanitation has helped a large number of families volunteering to have individual latrines. The response was overwhelming in villages where water was not a major problem, and in houses with either a functional water supply, or their own sources of water.
The government provides Rs. 8,700 for each latrine, with the beneficiary required to chip in Rs. 900.
The amount provided by the government is shared between the Centre and the State government.
Sources said ready to install toilets were also available in the market, which a beneficiary could use. Else he could construct one on his own.
