The affected are recovering, says District Health Officer

HASSAN: As many as 53 people were taken ill at Bettegodanahalli village in Holenarsipur taluk on Thursday after they ate food at a death ceremony. On Friday, another 10 people were taken ill.

District Surveillance Officer Hemalatha Shivakumar said the feast was organised in connection with the death anniversary of a person. Some of the affected were taken to Holenarsipur General Hospital, while the others are being treated at the local school where a classroom has been converted into a makeshift ward.

Ms. Shivakumar said that samples of the food had been sent for tests at the Public Health Institute, Bangalore, while water samples had been sent to the district laboratory in Hassan.

The village comes under Chakenahalli Primary Health Centre, and medical officer Chandrasekhar has been camping in the village since Thursday. District Health Officer Thimmaiah visited the village on Thursday.

Dr. Thimmaiah said that the affected people were recovering.
