HASSAN: As many as 45 people have fallen ill reportedly after drinking contaminated water in Hemavathi Reservoir Project Colony. The first case was reported on Tuesday.

District Surveillance Officer Hemalatha Shivakumar, who visited H.R.P. Colony on Wednesday, told The Hindu that all the 45 were taken to the government hospital at Arkalagud. While five of them were discharged on Tuesday itself, the remaining were undergoing treatment for suspected gastroenteritis, she said. They were responding to treatment, she added.

Ms. Shivakumar said that water was pumped from the Hemavathi reservoir to the treatment plant at Beakanahalli, where the water was filtered and pumped to two overhead tanks in H.R.P. Colony. Drinking waster was supplied from here to the 240 houses in the area, she said.

Ms. Shivakumar said she suspected both water contamination and food poisoning. Water from the pipes and stool samples of the victims had been collected and sent to a laboratory, she said.

Executive Engineer of Hemavathi reservoir Prakash suspected water contamination, as distribution pipes were broken in places in the colony.
