Bijapur: The police took 33 persons into preventive custody in Bijapur city on Tuesday. The action followed incidents of stone-throwing on some government and private buses on Monday following the publication of an article in a Kannada daily.

An incident of stone-throwing was also reported in the communally sensitive Takade Galli here on Tuesday night, wherein the windows of a bus were damaged. Additional police forces have been despatched to communally sensitive areas.

Meanwhile, some Muslim organisations have called for a Bijapur bandh on Saturday demanding action against the Kannada daily. They have also called for action against those responsible for the violence in Shimoga and Hassan districts.

Compensation sought

The organisations demanded that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa visit Hassan and Shimoga districts and promise compensation to those who lost their property.

Denouncing the violence in Bijapur on Monday, the organisations said they were acts of anti-social elements.
