The incident took place 6 km from Hosangady village; no one was injured

Nearly 300 domestic LGP cylinders burst into flames in a truck at Hulikal Ghat about six km from Hosangady village, under Amasebail police station limits, in Udupi district on Monday. Luckily, no one was hurt.

M.B. Boralingaiah, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that the truck had left MRPL in Mangalore and was proceeding to Ranebennur in Haveri district, when at the Hulikal Ghat, the truck driver noticed smoke. He immediately got down and saw that a fire had erupted from under the truck.

The driver and cleaner tried to douse the fire by using a fire extinguisher, but their efforts went in vain.

The fire began to spread and the gas cylinders began to burst into flames, one after the other.

The driver and cleaner ran to safety. The incident took place between 4.30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

As soon as the Police and Fire and Emergency Service Personnel were informed, as many as four fire tenders from Udupi and Kundapur rushed to the spot. But by then the majority of cylinders had exploded leaving 15 intact. Traffic on the road was diverted to Kollur road.

“The lorry driver suspects that a short circuit might have caused the fire. But the matter will be investigated further,” Mr. Boralingaiah said.

Fire tenders from Tirthahalli and Sagar in Shimoga district had also joined the operations to control the fire. Debris has been cleared from the road, Mr. Boralingaiah said.

A case has been registered at the Amasebail police station.
