CHIKMAGALUR: As many as 6,237 candidates are contesting the 2,080 seats in the 216 gram panchayats in Chikmagalur district, polling for which will be held on May 12.

Of these, 1,460 candidates belong to the Scheduled Castes, 406 to the Scheduled Tribes, 1,431 to BCM ‘A', 506 to BCM ‘B', and 2,434 are from the general category.

As many as 201 candidates have been elected unopposed in the district.

Of the 47 gram panchayats in Chikmagalur taluk, 455 people will be elected to 46 panchayats. There are 1,380 candidates in the fray. Polling will be held for all 59 panchayats in Kadur taluk. Of the 1,524 candidates contesting the elections, 538 will be elected. There are 1,310 candidates in the fray for 418 seats in 44 panchayats in Tarikere taluk. In N.R. Pura taluk, there are 14 panchayats and out of the 431 people in the fray, 144 persons will be elected. Of the 20 panchayats in Koppa taluk, 525 persons are contesting for 180 seats.

Sringeri taluk has the lowest number of panchayats in the district. There are 236 candidates in the fray for 81 seats in nine panchayats.

Mudigere taluk, which has 24 panchayats, has 831candidates for 264 seats.
