Authorities have banned all forms of protests in front of the district offices
CHIKMAGALUR: Over 20 daily-wage workers of the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) courted arrest here on Wednesday to protest against the negligence of the district administration and the State Government in addressing their grievances.
They were arrested when they were proceeding towards the district offices to stage a dharna.
The authorities have banned all forms of protests in front of the district offices. The agitators shouted slogans and squatted on the road in front of the municipal office when the police prevented them from proceeding further.
They pointed out that they have been neglected after the company closed down its mining operations in Kudremukh on December 31, 2005.
Over 1,000 families have been rendered jobless and repeated appeals to the authorities and the Government have not been heeded.
They said the workers were instrumental in getting huge profits for the company, which in turn paid considerable amounts in taxes to the State Government.
They wanted to be treated on a par with permanent workers who were receiving generous amounts for being laid off.
