They were not in working condition

The police found 17 guns abandoned at Vadarkere near Siddapura in the Shankarnarayana police station limits in Udupi district on Monday.

Superintendent of Police Y.S. Ravi Kumar told The Hindu that the police found these guns abandoned in a desolate place at Vadarkere, about half a kilometre from Siddapura village.

Of the 17 guns, 16 were single barrelled guns, and one was a double-barrelled gun. All the 17 guns were old and were not in working condition. Many barrels and chambers of these guns were damaged.

The police were trying to find out as to who owned these guns and why they had been abandoned.

Case registered

A case had been registered under the Arms Act in the Shankarnarayana police station limits.

Asked if the guns belonged to the naxalites as Shankarnarayana police station came under the naxal-affected area, Mr. Kumar said: “The naxal angle is mostly ruled out”.
