Madikeri: A herd of 17 elephants were driven back into the Karadibetta area in Hassan from Kodagu side on Monday night. Crackers were burst and drums were beaten to chase away the animals.

Deputy Conservator of Forests, Madikeri Division, B.B. Mallesh, who visited the spot told The Hindu that the elephants had entered Kodagu from Hassan recently and were found at an abandoned paddy field and they strayed into the Hampapura, Kerodi, Kirikodli areas. They were unable to penetrate further into Kodagu because of the precence of solar fence.

The operation on Monday was easier than that on Sunday when a small herd of elephants had been driven back to the Dubare Reserve Forest, he said. It was easy to drive away the elephants from plain lands unlike the tough terrain at Maragodu where the operations concluded on Sunday, he added.
