MYSORE: Personnel from the Forest Department doused a major fire, set by some miscreants, at the Chamundi Hills here on Wednesday.
Though their timely intervention helped to contain a major damage to flora and fauna, sources said, about 1.5 acres of forest had been destroyed. The fire was noticed around 6 p.m. by the personnel. Though fire brigade personnel rushed to the area, they were unable to reach the spot as the terrain was steep. The forest guards battled for over an hour to extinguish the fire, the sources added.
The personnel said they were able to contain the blaze as they had cut over 50 km of fire lines at key points on the Chamundi Hills in January and were prepared for such fire.
Drawing fire lines is a mechanism in which forest area is demarcated into different zones and the vegetation is cleared along the boundary line of these zones to prevent fire from spreading from one portion to another.
This is the first major fire reported from the Chamundi Hills during this season and the Forest Department has roped in the services of over 15 guards to keep a watch on the possible outbreak of fire, till the onset of monsoon.
