As many as 1.4 lakh students have registered for the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to professional colleges this year, said a release from the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) on Tuesday.

As against 1.2 lakh applications in 2012, 1.4 lakh candidates have registered for CET to be held on May 1, 2 and 3.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority officials attribute the increase in the number of applications received this year to additional courses for which admission will be based on CET marks, and also to the increased number of students taking up the science stream in pre-university.

The KEA release says that at least 15,000 candidates have registered for CET as they aspire to take up B.Sc. (Agriculture).

And, while 1.18 lakh students took up second pre-university science examination in 2011-12, as many as 1.78 lakh appeared for it in 2012-13.

Bangalore South (19,070), Bangalore North (17,514) and Belgaum (11,383) top the list of districts with the most number of science students in second pre-university.
