The Fire and Emergency Services Department in the city received 1,163 calls of fire incidents since January 2013. In the same period, it got 188 calls for other kinds of rescue. The latest call was regarding a fire in the basement of a three-storey apartment building in Fraser Town.
Some 150 residents, including the elderly and children, vacated the building from the only exit — a dark and smoke-filled staircase. Amid screams, residents scrambled to help family members and neighbours out of the building through the staircase that was plunged into darkness.
Like the incident in Fraser Town, many incidents have been reported in the city. August saw 85 fires in the city, while the fire officials have received 18 calls so far in September.
Commanding Officer of Fire fighting, Civil Defence, Moiez Ahmed, on Wednesday, highlighted the precautionary measures to be followed in case of such emergencies.
In case of the Frazer Town incident, there were no proper fire prevention measures in place.
