Following the tradition of publishing major works of Kannada literature during the Vishwa Kannada Sammelan, the Department of Kannada and Culture is bringing out 100 important works in all genres of Kannada literature during the second edition of the sammelan.
Rashtrakavi G.S. Shivarudrappa will release the works at the inaugural function. A committee, headed by L.S. Seshagiri Rao, has selected 100 major works of Kannada for publication.
Sources in the Department of Kannada and Culture disclosed that a small number of copies, needed for just the release function, were being readied. It would take some time to reach the readers a complete set of books. However, no decision had been taken with regard to reaching them to the people at subsidised rates on the lines of what was done during the first edition of the sammelan held in Mysore. Meanwhile, there is discontent in the literary circles over the selection of works taken up for publication. It is said that prominence has been given to the genre of novels over other forms, including poetry and short story. Leaving out the works of Jnanpith-recipient writers Da.Ra. Bendre, Shivarama Karanth and Girish Karnad has surprised many. There is also discontent over the poor representation of women writers — only five — in the selection. The former Chairman of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Chandrashekara Patil said that the committee could have selected works of 30 women writers. When contacted, Prof. Seshagiri Rao clarified that many works were not being selected as Department of Kannada and Culture was bringing them out under other schemes. “To avoid duplication, the selection committee did not select some important works,” he said.
