VISAKHAPATNAM: New Election Watch has lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission on violation of election code by Andhra University with regard to installation of the statue of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
The complaint said the decision of AU Executive Council to install the statue of the late leader on the university campus was violation of code, which was then in force due to by-election conducted for a municipal division.
In a complaint lodged with the SEC, New Election Watch member S. Bhujanga Rao said that they had objected to the installation of the statue immediately after the decision by the council. Stating that they were not against installation of the statue but were hurt at the timing. They should have sought permission of the authorities concerned or verified whether such a decision was in violation of the code.
He also said while spending public money, the university administration should have consulted all concerned.
Public money was involved in the shape of students’ fee amounts.
Mr. Rao said recently the Supreme Court warned the Uttar Pradesh Government and its Chief Minister Mayawati not to misuse public funds for the purpose of construction/installation of memorials and statues in their State.
