District Congress Committee president Gadugu Gangadhar has said that it is unbecoming of the YSR Congress party leaders to say that the just concluded Rachabanda programme was used by the Congress government only to gain publicity and political mileage.

At a press conference here on Monday, he said the YSR Congress leaders indulged in mud-slinging as they were unable to stomach the success of the programme. They would have got to know the benefits accrued to the poor through the Rachabanda if they had gone to the people, he added.

Claiming that the Rachabanda was a great success, the DCC president said that 1.12 lakh ration cards were distributed, 18,000 houses and about 20,000 pensions were sanctioned to the poor. He also said that Rs.13 crore had been extended to women Self Help Groups under the ‘pavala vaddi' scheme.

Reacting to the critical comments made by opposition leaders in Kamareddi on former Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir, he said it was Mr. Shabbir, who as the then Electricity Minister was instrumental in setting up a number of electric sub-stations and transformers in the district.

Mr. Gangadhar also found fault with the opposition's objection to the security to Mr. Shabbir saying that the latter was given additional security.
