HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed officials to expedite the process of land acquisition for irrigation projects and deal with the issue of resettlement and rehabilitation of the displaced in a sensitive manner.

Dr. Reddy, who reviewed the district-wise progress of land acquisition with top officials of the Irrigation, Revenue and Finance Departments, said no project should be hindered by any problem or delay in land acquisition.

Shortage of manpower for land acquisition was discussed and it was decided to fill all vacancies at the earliest, besides "Wherever necessary outsourcing should be done."

Sensitive task

According to a press release, Dr. Reddy stressed the need for living up to promises in land acquisition compensation cases. He pointed out that the State had put in place an excellent resettlement and rehabilitation policy in which the benefits were clearly spelt out. Resettlement and rehabilitation was an important and sensitive task and involved displacing people for "a larger and common good", the Chief Minister said.

Regarding Pulichintala project, he asked the Chief Engineer and Collectors to reconcile the statistics and sort out any pending issues with the Endowments Commissioner.
