A youth, who allegedly consumed pesticide unable to bear “humiliation” after being questioned by the police in connection with a theft case in Garla five days ago, died at a private hospital here on Tuesday. The incident triggered protests by the relatives of the deceased in Garla mandal headquarters. Sources said that Sadik, 33, a trolley autorickshaw operator, swallowed some poisonous substance in Garla on April 26. He died during the course of treatment at a super specialty hospital in Khammam on Tuesday. Incensed over the incident, his relatives staged a demonstration in front of the police station in Garla with the body of Sadik. The protesters raised slogans accusing the Garla police of subjecting Sadik to torture based on false charges. The agitation continued till late in the evening. They called off the stir following the intervention of the officials of the Yellendu division who assured to probe the matter. When contacted, Garla Bayyaram CI Ramana Reddy said that Sadik was questioned by the local police in connection with a case pertaining to theft of sheep. Denying the allegations of torture, he said a case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) was registered by the police officials concerned based on a complaint lodged by the relatives of the deceased.
