A youth M. Murali, 27, who allegedly injured a widow when she resisted his attempt to rob her of her gold ornaments at Official Colony on Friday night, was arrested by the One Town Police. Giving details of the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) P. Viswa Prasad said here on Saturday that Murali of Vizianagaram district, migrated to the city 15 years ago and worked as a cooking master in different hotels and tiffin parlours. He is married and staying at a rented house at Kotha Salipeta . He had no work for the last one month and had no money to look after the needs of his family and to pay his motorcycle finance instalment amount. He decided to commit crimes for easy money. Around 8.30 p.m. on Friday, he went to the flat of Upmaka Suseela Kumari (52) in Official Colony. He told her that he was working in a gas company and had come to check the gas connection and the gas cylinder number. Believing his words, Suseela Kumari opened the grill gate and allowed him into the flat. The accused tried to pull at her two tolas gold chain and when she raised an alarm, he hit her on her face and mouth due to which two of her teeth came off and blood oozed profusely.

Murali removed the gold chain and while he was trying to escape, an inmate of the neighbouring flat came running and caught the accused. He was later handed over to the One Town Inspector S. Eliyas Mohammed.

The police officer presented cash awards to three neighbours of the victim for apprehending the accused.

Additional DCP (Crime) Mohammad Khan, Assistant Commissioner of Police (East) S. Venkata Rao and Inspector Eliyas Mohammed were present at the media conference.

Three arrested

Three youths were arrested and gold ornaments allegedly stolen by them were recovered. Giving details to the media Mr. , Mohammad Khan said that the accused K. Sreedhar Babu (22), a native of Vijayawada, N. Gowri Sankar (20) and G. John (21), both from the city, were friends. They were arrested at VUDA Park bus stop. The case was investigated by Inspector S. Appala Raju, SI N. Srinivasa Rao, and ASI Md. Yunus .
