A Kerala-based youth, who is believed to be suffering from mental ailment, allegedly attacked several villagers including a few women at Patharlapadu village in Chintakani mandal on Thursday. The incident caused a commotion in the village as the fear stricken women ran helter-skelter after being chased by the youth.

According to the police, the youth identified as Shaji Mathew, 35, a native of Kattangal in Kerala, alighted from a train at Chintakani and arrived at Patharlapadu late in the afternoon. On noticing him wandering on the streets in the village, some villagers tried to ascertain his identity. He allegedly turned violent and started beating whomever he came across. He chased some women and unleashed terror in the village, sources added. A section of the local youths overpowered him after a long chase. They tied his hands and beat him up before calling the police. The local police rushed to the village and detained the youth. They ascertained his identity based on some phone numbers written on a piece of paper wrapped in his pocket. The police alerted his relatives over phone and shifted him to the district headquarters hospital for treatment.
