Youth athletics meet from May 18

Preparations are on in full swing for the 10th National Youth Athletics Championship to be held by Guntur District Athletics Association (GDAA) at Brahmananda Reddy Stadium here in Guntur from May 18.

Over 600 athletes and 200 officials from different parts of the country are expected to take part in the championship, which is also a selection meet for the World and Asian Youth Athletics Championship.

Former Olympian and Asian Games gold medallist P.T Usha, popularly called as, ‘Payyoli Express,’ is expected to attend the games. Ms. Usha would have fond memories of the B.R Stadium as it was here during the National Athletics Championship in 1989, she had discovered her form. Athletics Federation of India secretary, Ck. Valson is too expected to take part in the meet.

Secretary, GDAA, G. Seshaiah said that arrangements were being made for conducting 42 track and field events in boys and girls sections. The organisers are going to set up photo finish camera and stringent anti-doping measures were being set up.

The GDAA has a history of organising national athletics events. In the years 2007 and 2010, the GDAA organised All India Inter Zonal Athletics Championship on the premises of Acharya Nagarjuna University.

District Collector S. Suresh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Guntur Rural, J. Satyanarayana have convened review meetings and assured their support to the meet.
