Kurnool Heart Foundation, set up in 2002, has a holistic approach towards preventing diseases and works on a principle ‘Your health in your hands’. It focuses on ensuring positive health of its members and general public as well. Established with an objective of creating awareness on heart ailments, it works on three basic tenets – good dietary habits, regular exercise and non-smoking.
Conducting programmes on heart ailments apart, the Foundation succeeded in setting up a Health Club in 2011 equipped with gym, yoga centre and meditation centre. And only nominal charges are collected from users.
District Collector being the chairman of the Foundation has its advantages as he managed to get funds sanctioned from the government under MLA development fund for construction of three-storied building to house gym, yoga and meditation centre. Besides, former Minister T.G. Venkatesh sponsored gym equipment worth Rs. 6 lakh.
P. Chandrasekhar, secretary of the Health Club, said incidence of hypertension and diabetes was alarmingly high with the affected population being in the range of 20 to 30 per cent. Diabetes was five per cent in excess of hypertension while heart problems accounted for 15 per cent. According to an estimate, the population of the diseased people would reach 50 per cent by 2025 if no remedial steps were taken.
According to him, 80 per cent of the diseases are preventable if people exercise regularly, maintain their diet and avoid smoking.
