World Diabetic Day was marked by meetings and seminars at the General Hospital here on Wednesday under the auspices of Department of Endocrinology.
Principal G.V. Ramprasad, Superintendent Umamaheswar, Srinivasulu, endocrinologist, former professors Tirumalachari, Ramachandra Reddy and Dr.Bhavani Prasad spoke.
The expert panel expressed concern over the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. According to him, 62 million people suffered from diabetes and 77 million others were in the pre-diabetic state.
The experts said younger people were affected by the disease and youth in their late twenties were also affected. On account of the disease, the quality of life was affected and the disease was passed to the next generation.
The superintendent said the department of endocrinology would get a building of its own soon and other full-fledged infrastructure.
The department planned a camp at the General Hospital on Thursday to create awareness among the people.
