Collector’s wife formally inaugurates the meet

All facilities promised to promising ruralites

GUNTUR: Some 600 athletes gathered at the Brahmanada Reddy Stadium here on Monday to compete in the three-day district-level Rural and Women Sports Meet.

In a keen competition on Monday, boys, girls and women displayed their skills in abundance in kho-kho, volleyball, wrestling and weight-lifting. The three-day selection games to send winners to the State-level Rural and Women’s Sports Meet to be organised next month, was formally inaugurated by District Collector B. Venkatesham’s wife B. Geethalakshmi.

Expressing her happiness at the number of rural women of all ages turning up at the sports meet, she asked them to come to Guntur and practise under the guidance of coaches to be provided by the District Sports Development Officer.

“Facilities will be provided to all the promising ruralites,” she added.

While boys and girls below 16 years were eligible under two categories, there was no upper age limit for women’s category.

Kho-kho was the most keenly fought event that lasted till evening and simultaneously some girls and boys showed interest in volleyball and there were good number of spectators to encourage them.

There were 260 kho-kho players, 300 volleyball players and 45 participants from almost all mandals in Guntur district in wrestling and weight-lifting.

Competitions were organised at the BR Stadium, but swimming would be held at Municipal Pool at Pattabhipuram and football at Loyala School in Nallapadu on Tuesday, Prattipati Ramakrishna, DSDO, said.

Accommodation

Accommodation and food was being provided to all the participants at the BR Stadium, Mr. Ramakrishna said. There were 100 physical education trainers and nine coaches of all the 12 events to be organised during the three days.

On Tuesday, kabaddi, shuttle badminton, hockey, football and basketball events would be organised.

Handball was being organised at Tenali, while swimming, table tennis, tennis and gymnastics would be organised on Wednesday.
