Many a time, victims of eve-teasing and sexual harassment do not lodge complaints against the perpetrators of the crime fearing adverse reactions from those who are supposed to protect them.

The city police have decided to have a woman nodal officer (contact person) in all degree colleges, including engineering colleges, in the city to be on the lookout for mischief mongers and help victims confide in the woman coordinator.

“We will not insist on the victim to give her identity. Based on the details given by her, we will investigate into the matter and initiate appropriate remedial measures. This will give the girl students confidence to report against eve-teasers, be they their classmates, seniors, or even teachers,” Police Commissioner B. Shivadhar Reddy told The Hindu on Wednesday.

“We have already instructed the managements of all colleges to select the women nodal officers. A meeting will be held with the nodal officers on International Women’s Day to give them instructions on the way to go about their work,” he said.

Girl students can now breathe easy as they can now fall back on the nodal officer and confide in her.

Fears allayed

They need not fear that the nodal officers would join hands with the college management as their work would be monitored by the police officers of the concerned police stations.
