A person cited as witness in a murder committed five years ago in Uppal landed behind bars on Saturday after attempting suicide stating that he was being pressurised to give evidence against the murder accused.

Vamshi Krishna Chowdhary doused himself with kerosene and tired to set himself afire in front of the DGP office at Lakdikapool.

He alleged that Parameshwar Reddy, brother of the murder victim Jagadishwar Reddy, was pressurising him to give evidence in the court to get the accused persons convicted.

“I was passing by when miscreants attacked the victim in 2007 and shifted him to hospital where he died. Now, his brother wants me to give evidence in their favour,” the police quoted him as saying.

According to Saifabad Inspector V. Umender, Vamshi maintained that he had only shifted the victim to the hospital but was unaware of the attackers.

The previous day, he reportedly presented a petition before the State Human Rights Commission alleging harassment by the victim’s brother with regard to the murder case.

A case of attempt to suicide was registered against Vamshi. He was presented before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
