The Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF) on Saturday demanded that the police unconditionally withdraw the case registered against S. Nagesh Kumar, Resident Editor of The Hindu .
Giving a representation to District Collector D. S. Lokesh Kumar, the convenor of the Anantapur district unit of the APWJF said that the DGP, Dinesh Reddy, had resorted to immoral use of police power by orchestrating the filing of a case against the RE of The Hindu for publishing nothing more than straight news regarding the visit of the DGM to a religious head. The APWJF journalists took out a bike rally up to the District Collector’s camp office where a representation was given to the Collector to demand the withdrawal of the case against Mr. Nagesh Kumar.
On the other hand, the CPI district secretary, Jagadish, condemned what he called the ‘ruthless use of constitutionally granted power by the police’ to muzzle the voice of the people by filing false cases against The Hindu , which he described as one of the most credible newspapers. He also demanded the withdrawal of the case by the police and urged Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to look into the issue to ensure freedom of speech.
