IT major Wipro will commence its operations at its centre here in a couple of months. Wipro facilitator Balakrishnan informed this at a meeting on IT industry in tier II cities: prospects and challenges, here on Tuesday.
However, Mr. Balakrishnan did not give details of the kind of operations Wipro would carry out from its Visakhapatnam centre or the strength of employees. “Things are being finalised”, he said. Wipro completed construction of an impressive building a few years ago at the IT Hub. Satyam, now Mahindra Satyam, started its operations several years ago while Wipro completed its multi-storied building with an area of 2.20 lakh sft but kept it idle all these years. Wipro did not give reasons for not starting its operations.
About two years ago, a top Wipro executive while participating in a programme at Andhra University said activity would commence soon here with strength of about 500 employees but it did not happen. According to an officer of the State Government's IT Department, Wipro's establishment here could provide employment to 5,000, including a 2,000-strong BPO. Wipro at last willing to start its operations here was welcomed by Secretary (IT and C) to the State Government Sanjay Jaju and others. "You are a major IT company. If you arrive here, expectations rise and others will follow. Otherwise, they may also put on hold their projects."
Co-convenor of CII's AP ICT panel and CEO of Maple Software G.S. Siva Kumar said Wipro not starting its operations here worked as a deterrent for others and a top executive from Accenture said his chairman developed second thoughts on starting a unit here after learning that Wipro did not start operations here after constructing a huge accommodation for itself.
