HYDERABAD: President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has called for efforts to remove blindness from the country by 2020 and asked ophthalmologists to involve the vast reserve of NSS/NCC cadets in identifying blind persons across the villages.

Addressing the 65th all-India ophthalmological conference here on Thursday night, organised by the All-India Ophthalmological Society, and attended by over 6,000 delegates, and foreign teams from the US, Australia and Japan, the President advised eye specialists to concentrate on the under-privileged, among whom most of the blind persons were found across the rural areas.

He advised the AIOS to launch mobile hospitals equipped with surgical facilities with international cooperation to take the services to remote corners.
