VISAKHAPATNAM: Social and BC welfare hostels in the district have performed better than last year in the SSC examinations and the Collector J. Syamala Rao congratulated the Social Welfare and BC Welfare departments on their efforts.

While the district's overall pass percentage has dropped from 80.24 per cent of last year to 78.67 percent to this year (11ths place to 16 {+t} {+h} place in the State) and below the State average of 81.63 percent, the SC and BC welfare hostels showed better performance than last year.

The SC Welfare hostels recorded 94.49 per cent success, compared to 93.24 per cent of last year while BC Welfare hostels increased their pass percentage from 91.72 per cent of last year to 93.18 per cent this year.

Fourteen out of 34 SC Welfare hostels and 25 out of 66 BC hostels recorded 100 per cent success.

Mr. Syamala Rao on Monday congratulated Deputy Director of Social Welfare K. Ramakrishna and District BC Welfare Officer D. Nageswara Rao, their wardens, teachers and students for a better show this time.

A total of 46,787 pupils have appeared for the SSC examination all over the district and 36,807 have passed.

There was decrease in the results in GVMC schools and in Agency area schools. GVMC schools' pass percentage dropped from 69.32 per cent of last year to 67.53 per cent while it was 80.01 per cent this year in the Agency area compared to 86 per cent of last year.
