The ordering of a vigilance inquiry into the irregularities in the allotment of house sites/lands in Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) area is an attempt to shield local leaders involved in the VUDA land scams, said Telugu Desam Party District president Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu.

Addressing a media conference here on Thursday, he said the GO issued by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department ordering a detailed inquiry by the Vigilance DG and tabling of a report within three months was an attempt to divert the attention of the public.

He recalled as to how Vigilance reports on land scams given during the time of former VUDA Vice-Chairman G. Venkatram Reddy were given but no action was initiated against them.

Mr. Patrudu said that the current VUDA Vice Chairman K. Sashidhar had also felt that an independent inquiry should be ordered into the scams.

He said that it was unfortunate that no action was initiated by the State Government on the report presented by the Vice Chairman.

The TDP leader felt that the Vigilance Department had no individuality and hence the report to be tabled by it would have no sanctity.

The TDP leader alleged that heavy corruption had taken place during the tenure of former Vice Chairmen V.N. Vishnu and B. Sridhar. He felt that action on the two officials would help in bringing out the names of other leaders involved in the land scams.

He said that the TDP would picket the Collectorate on March 24 to press for a CBI enquiry into the VUDA land scam. TDP leader Kona Tata Rao was present at the press conference.
