The ongoing sub-junior girls’ championship here is sure to throw up more talent
District Women’s Hockey Association is conducting the championship
Despite inclement weather, schedule is expected to be completed
VISAKHAPATNAM: Women’s hockey seems to be looking up in Visakhapatnam and other districts. In January M. Satyavathi from the city became the first girl from Andhra region to play for the senior Indian women’s team, during series held in Chile and Argentina and four girls are in the sub-junior India camps.
The sub-junior girls championship, which commenced here on Thursday might throw up talented girls who could be nurtured to become internationals in the course of time.
Aditya Lakshmi of Kadapa, Hemalata of Visakahpatnam, Rajani of Chittoor and Varalaskhmi of East Godavari are in the sub-junior camp at present.
The newly-formed Vizag District Women’s Hockey Association is conducting the championship.
The meet is being held here for the first time and also attracted the highest number of participating teams, 15.
Hockey enthusiasts can watch the young talent over the next three days, the final will come up on Sunday.
The matches are being held at the Alwar Das stadium in MVP Colony and the DLB grounds at Salagrampuram.
The tournament was off to a colourful start at the Alwar Das stadium on Thursday morning.
The inclement weather till Wednesday affected the grounds but the schedule is expected to be completed as planned.
It was apt that the organisers invited two ladies of prominence for the inaugural function.
DIG of Police (Visakha Range) Soumya Misra inaugurated the meet while former Mayor Rajana Ramani was a special invitee.
They wished the organisers and the players success in future.President of the district association and vice-president of AP Women’s Hockey Association Jeeja valsaraj, vice-president Vijay Ravindra, Swati and A. Srinivas, patron K.V. Krishna Kumar, secretary L.R. Joseph Dass, coach June Gallyot, DSDO N. Surya Rao and others were present.
