The arrival of VIPs and political leaders in droves along with their respective entourages, made it more difficult for the police who, unable to manage the crowds, had to resort to repeated lathicharge, after the blasts in Dilsukhnagar on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses said that there was unusual delay in the police response at the blast site, in spite of the Saroornagar police station being situated close to the blast site. Even after arriving there, the police found it difficult to manage the situation due to the presence of people in huge numbers.
People kept returning to the blast site from the opposite side of the main road, despite repeated appeals to move away the site. Adding to the chaos was arrival of VIPs, including Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, BJP state president G. Kishen Reddy, and Mayor Majid Hussain, apart from DGP Dinesh Reddy. Mr. Hussain was gheraoed when he visited the scene.
On the other hand, political activists, including that of the BJP, came in groups and began to demonstrate near the blast sites. They raised slogans against the Chief Minister.
Local youth came down to help the police in managing the crowds. Yet the situation cold be brought under control only at about 10 p.m. after additional police forces were brought from other zones. NSG commandos were pressed into service for investigation.
Bomb disposal squad was also pressed into service along with a dog squad. Wireless messages were flashed across the police stations in the city to close down the shops. The police also advised the Muslim community not to carry anything to the mosques while going for Friday prayers.
