Vijayawada Division of South Central Railway (SCR) has registered a 14 per cent growth in gross earnings with revenue touching Rs.796 crore in the first quarter this year, compared to the previous year’s earnings for the same period.
Railways loaded 20 rakes of mangoes from Nuzvid and earned Rs.5.34 crore during 2013-14, which was only Rs.4.5 crore last year, said Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar.
Giving the details of passenger, goods and sundry earnings in the quarter ending June 30 at a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Pradeep Kumar said that while the target was Rs.755.18 crore for gross earnings, the railways achieved Rs. 796.17 crore.
The SCR loaded 7.550 metric tonnes of food grains, fertilisers, coal, cements and other commodities as against the target of 6.658 metric tonnes.
Through goods earnings the railways earned Rs.613 crore as against Rs.484 crore in the first quarter, said the DRM adding that 75 per cent of the loading comes from coal and fertilisers transportation.
From Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL) about 4.43 metric tonnes of commodities were loaded in 1,158 rakes, said Additional Divisional Railway Manager S. Subba Rao, who also attended the press conference.
Ticket checking drive
The officials booked as many as 2.4 lakh cases against those who were travelling without tickets and carrying luggage without booking from April to June this year, while 2 lakh cases were booked during the same period last year.
The SCR is taking several measures for the convenience of passengers in the Division, he added. As regards stepping up surveillance on railway station premises, 72 CC Cameras have been installed in Vijayawada, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Nellore and Ongole and 30 more have been proposed in Chirala, Tadepalligudem and other stations, said the DRM.
