Utkal Divas – Odisha Formation Day – was celebrated under the aegis of Utkal Smskrutik Samaj on the premises of Jagannath temple here on Monday.

The real greatness of Odisha lies in the fact that Oriyas are richly cultural conscious and advanced on several counts in life, Police Commissioner B Sivadhar Reddy, who inaugurated the celebration, said. Addressing the gathering, he paid rich tributes to culture and heritage of Odisha. They are peace-loving lot but never hesitate to defend the motherland through acts of exemplary courage. It was Oriyas, who transformed Chanda Ashok into Dharma Ashok in history, he said. “Odisha was the first linguistic state in our country and it was pioneer on that count for rest of the states that got formed on the basis of language post independence,” Mr Sivadhar Reddy said. Later, he released 11{+t}{+h}edition of the Samaj’s in-house magazine ‘Arunima. President of the Samaj J.K. Nayak, secretary Bijoy Kumar Mahapatra, vice-presidents R.P. Sahoo, Arundas, cultural secretary Seema Mohanty, Meera Chowdhary, Oriya writer Purna Prabha Devi and others took part. Later, a string of folk dances showcased the grace and grandeur of rural life in Odisha.
