Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited Director (finance) P. Madhusudhan on Tuesday said telecommunications played a key role in ensuring connectivity, dissemination of information and speedy disposal of files.

He was speaking at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebrations at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

He said information and communication technologies were the key factors to improve e-governance and strengthening connectivity in urban as well as rural areas with the increase in popularity of internet.

Mr. Madhusudhan was all praise for Telecommunications Department for providing excellent facilities to VSP's employees in fulfilling the committed targets. He said they should innovate and come out with value added service and a scheme to reward employees who excel and award them each year on this day. He also presented awards to the winners of competitions held on the occasion.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated every year on May 17 since 1969 to mark the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1965 and the creation of International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The purpose of observing the day is to create awareness on the use of Internet and other information and communication technologies and bridge the digital divide.

This year the theme is ‘Better life in rural communities with information and communication technologies.' The theme of this year aims to ensure that information and communication technologies contribute towards a better future for rural population.
