The International Women's Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at various places in Prakasam district on Thursday.

Taking part in the celebrations, Congress MP M. Srinivasulu Reddy asserted that the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was committed to socio-economic and political empowerment of women.

Women employees working in various departments and senior district officers led by in-charge Collector P. Lakshminarasimhum formed a human chain at the busy Church centre here.

Zilla parishad former chairperson Kattam Arunamma, DRDA Project Director A. Padmaja, Animal Husbandry Joint Director N. Rajinikumari, Board of Intermediate Education RIO S. Arunakumari were among those honoured on the occasion. Students of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya led by its principal K Sagarika and teachers took out an impressive rally on the occasion.

Women's Day was celebrated in different schools by holding cultural programmes and games competitions for women teachers.

The NTR Kalaparishad organised cultural programmes and honoured women in different walks of life on the occasion.

Seminar

A seminar on ‘Empower rural women - End hunger and poverty' was organised in Bapatla by Viveka Service Society.

Participating as the chief guest, renowned classical dancer Swathi Somnath said women possess the capability to bear several responsibilities at a time. VSS president N.V.V. Nagaraju spoke. A legal awareness meeting on women's issues was held on the same occasion. Bapatla Additional Junior Civil Judge Mary Danamma took part as the chief guest.

Later, Ms. Mary Danamma and Ms. Swathi Somnath presented ‘Suvarna Rani Gandham Memorial Award' to Kurnool Medical College professor Chadalavada Usharani, a former IAS officer who established a micro-finance company ‘Maanaveeya Holdings & Investments'.

Sports contests

Sports competitions for women employees, felicitation of distinguished women of various spheres among other activities marked the celebration of Women's Day in Khammam district. A sports and games tournament was organised by the TNGO's Association exclusively for the women employees of various government departments at Sardar Patel Stadium here.

A fruit distribution programme was organised at Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency in Bhadrachalam to mark the occasion.
