Opposition parties trying to create political mileage out of the projects, say speakers

Parties urged not to make any noises

VIJAYAWADA: The 208 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary celebrations of British irrigation engineer Arthur Cotton organised by the AP Jalayagna Sadhana Samithi on Saturday saw speakers talking about the need to launch a united struggle to achieve national status to Polavaram project and ensure its early completion.

Pulichintala project

They also stressed the impending need to complete the Pulichintala project.

Animal Husbandry Minister K. Parthasarathy, Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah, former ministers Mandali Buddha Prasad, Devineni Rajasekhar, former whip Samineni Udayabhanu, AP Jalayagna Sadhana Samithi president Kolanukonda Shivaji and others spoke.

Referring to the expression of concern by the Praja Rajyam and the Telugu Desam over delay in getting national status to, and completion of, Polavaram project, the speakers said these opposition parties were trying for a political mileage out of the projects.

The Telugu Desam Party had utterly failed to create additional ayacut and come to the rescue of farmers during its nine year rule, while the Praja Rajyam was not even born when the government secured all clearances for the Polavaram project.

The speakers urged the parties not to make any noises “in the larger interests of farmers and overall development of State.”

Farmers' leader Yerneni Nagendranath expressed the view that Polavaram and Pulichintala projects should be completed at the earliest failing which the Krishna delta would go dry in the event of bifurcation of the State.

The Institution of Engineers India local chapter chairman M.R.S. Prakasa Rao, city Congress president Pyla Sominaidu and others were present.
