Although the government is upbeat about ensuring that every child goes to school, certain hiccups remain – primarily the lack of adequate number of teachers in schools across the country.
The problem is more acute in certain areas, primarily remote tribal areas and the North East region, UNICEF experts said. Taking cognizance of this key issue, the Right to Education Act authorises States to recruit lesser-qualified teachers and train and equip them accordingly.
However, the teachers so recruited shall have to attain the minimum qualifications required of the post within five years from the time of recruitment.
Addressing a virtual press conference from New Delhi, UNICEF education and communication specialists interacted with journalists from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. They were all praise for RTE. To spread awareness on RTE, UNICEF has embarked on a digital awareness campaign ‘Awaaz Do', whose online users touched two lakh.
