At a traditional ceremony, Reverend Udumala Bala was ordained as the new Bishop of the Warangal Catholic Diocese at the historical Fathima cathedral here on Thursday.
He would be head and spiritual guide for 70,000 Catholics spread in Warangal and Karimnagar districts and would be overseeing the work entrusted to him by the Vatican the supreme seat of the Catholics the world over.
Bishop Bala would also oversee the functioning of scores of educational institutions, hospitals and charity organisations working under the diocese.
The Fathima Nagar wore a festive large number of people turned up to have a glimpse of the ceremony. There was Archbishop of Mumbai, Oswald Cardinal Gracias, one of the 10 cardinals forming the advisory committee of the Pope. There was Vatican representative to India the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Salvatore Pennachio and archbishop of Hyderabad Thumma Bala who consecrated the new bishop of Warangal diocese.
Undertaking the new role, Bishop Udumala Bala vowed to continue the work of Catholic Church serving the humanity and attract more believers.
The streets in Fathima Nagar were swept clean and huge tents were erected.On their arrival, the Vatican ambassador Salvatore Pennachio and Cardinal Oswald Gracias and others were accorded warm and traditional welcome by scores of women who offered tilak at the Kazipet flyover. They were taken in a colourful procession as the police band heightened the festive mood with its excellent rendering.
The procession was taken to Bishop House first and then to the Fathima Cathedral.
