The proposal of the GVMC to merge neighbouring Anakapalle and Bheemunipatnam is only going to stretch the resources of the civic body further, Visakhapatnam North MLA Tynala Vijaya Kumar said.
In a letter to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, the MLA urged him not to change the present composition and territorial jurisdiction of GVMC. He sought upgrading of Bheemunipatnam Municipality into Municipal Corporation to retain its heritage status as it is 150 year old and one of the oldest in the country. He wanted Anakapalle Municipality to be upgraded into Municipal Corporations by integrating industrial areas of Achuthapuram, Parawada and Sabbavaram educational corridor making it a self-sustained and more viable local self government.
He called for a broad-based interactive session with the officials and public representatives from the region to discuss the proposal.
There has been no development in the 32 panchayats that were merged into the GVMC in 2005, and they are lacking in basic amenities even today, he pointed out contesting the argument that the merger of the two municipalities would help their development. The revenue from the 32 panchayats has not grown and in fact they have become a burden on the already stretched GVMC resources, he noted.
Salaries and pension of employees of proposed areas of merger would be an additional burden on GVMC which will be recurring and proportionately increasing every year, he wrote in the letter.
He urged the Chief Minister not to clear the proposed merger as it would be detrimental to the development of Visakhapatnam.
