Heavy rains in parts of Rayalaseema and south Coastal Andrha since Wednesday night have claimed two lives in Nellore district.
Uppala Venkata Rao (40) died when lightning struck him in the fields near Pamuguntapalem on Kavali outskirts on Thursday. Three others suffered injuries in the incident and were admitted to a hospital.
In another incident, Shaik Ibrahim (60) of Jaladanki drowned in Chippaleru canal into which he ventured while he was grazing cattle.
Nellore and Prakasam districts besides several places in Rayalaseema experienced rain as the North-East monsoon turned active under the influence of a trough of low pressure lying over the Bay of Bengal close to the coasts of Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra. They are in for further rains as the trough is likely to remain strong on Friday also. Nellore district, on an average, reported a rainfall of 41 mm.
Kavali and Kandukur in Nellore and Prakasam districts respectively recorded a heavy rainfall of 8 cm each and Nellore city, Puttur, Gudur and Seetharamapuram 5 cm each. There was 4 cm rainfall at Vinjamur, and 3 cm each at Amalapuram, Chittoor, Amarapuram, Satyavedu and Thamballapalli.
A forecast issued by India Meteorological Department said that there would be isolated heavy rains at places in Nellore and Prakasam districts and some places in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on Friday.
