A cooking gas delivery man and a lorry driver were arrested by police for diverting subsidised cooking gas cylinders for commercial use in Ongole on Saturday.

Police recovered 300 empty and 320 filled-in cooking gas cylinders after intercepting the lorry being driven by one Veerababu(32) to Nellore. Police are on the look out for three persons, including a gas agency dealer in Krishna district, in this connection.

Explaining the modus operandi, Ongole Taluka police circle Inspector I.Srinivasan probe revealed that 28-year-old Srinivasa Rao used to collect empty cylinders from select customers promising quicker deliveries for them.

By rotating the cylinders in his possession, he had been giving subsidised cooking cylinders for Rs.1,500 to Rs.2,000 per cylinder for hotels and other commercial establishments.

Following pressure from domestic users for return of their empty cylinders in the wake of cap on subsidised cooking gas cylinders imposed by the Centre, he had struck a deal with a gas agency at Kondapalli in Krishna district for supply of cylinders to him for Rs.2,500 per cylinder. He was bringing them to Ongole when he caught by the police.

In another case, a 28-year-old fake baba who used to take away gold ornaments from housewives to multiply their wealth by performing Bhavani pooja, was also nabbed.

He had also taken away a car from a resident of NGO colony here in 2010. Investigation was on to recover gold jewellery from him, Mr. Srinivasan added.
