NALGONDA: Two workers were killed and another injured in an accidental explosion inside SLBC Tunnel-II near Teldevarapalli in Chandampet mandal in the district on Saturday morning.
The explosion occurred at around 6.30 a.m. during a drilling operation, about 2.5 km deep into the tunnel, causing grievous injuries to three workers. Uttam (25), Gattulal (35), and Pramod (40), who were working in the morning shift, sustained injuries in the blast. Uttam of West Bengal and Gattulal of Madhya Pradesh succumbed to the wounds later. The condition of Pramod was stated to be out of danger.
The blast occurred when the operator concerned, allegedly switched on the generator soon after a power breakdown inside the tunnel without adhering to safety precautions. Though the exact cause was not immediately known, it was suspected that the negligence of the operator had caused a short circuit. Meanwhile, Devarakonda Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Padmakar Rao and Circle Inspector Sardar Singh visited the explosion site.
When contacted, Mr. Sardar Singh said that a case of negligence was registered against the operator, Ajay. “We have launched a detailed inquiry to ascertain the exact reason for the blast,” he said.
