Two 50 tonne bollard pull tugs, MT Dhiraj and MT Sahas, built for the Navy by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) were flagged off by HSL Director (Ship Building) Commodore (retired) K.S. Subramanian on Wednesday.
The tugs will have an important role in handling the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, which is expected to arrive at Karwar in January. Both the tugs will be based at the Naval Base in Karwar.
For HSL, delivering the two vessels on a single day coinciding with the Navy Day is a significant achievement. The tugs were seen off at the HSL jetty by a large contingent of officers, staff, workers, warship overseeing team, IRS and contractors.
The vessels were built as per Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) class with Agni 1 notation.
They can attain a maximum speed of 12 knots and achieve a bollard pull almost 10 per cent in excess of specifications.
