Telugu Theatre Day celebrated
The Telugu Theatre Day was celebrated in a grand manner on Monday coinciding with the birth anniversary of Kandukuri Veeresalingam, eminent social worker and the first Telugu playwright.
Artistes from all over the district took out an impressive procession on the arterial Trunk Road and assembled at Prakasam Bhavan Open Auditorium.
Glowing tributes were paid to Kandukuri on the occasion by among others District Joint Collector P. Lakshminarasimhum and District Revenue Officer J. Radhakrishnamurthy.
Noted personalities who strove for the development of Telugu theatre – M. Sriramamurthy, G. Govindu (mythological plays), S. Sriramamurthy and N. Dasaih (social plays) and Malyadri (street plays) were honoured with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 each and mementos on the occasion. A special honour was given to Maripudi Subramanya Sastry.
Hike in pension sought
Praja Natya Mandali honorary State president Nalluri Venkateswarulu sought hike in pension for artistes to Rs. 2,000 and provision of pension to all artistes on saturation basis instead of restricting it to 10,000 artistes in the State, concessional travel in RTC buses, house sites for artistes and construction of auditorium in Ongole.
